Centre de données astronomiques de Strasbourg
The Strasbourg astronomical data center (CDS) provides reference astronomical services:
- SIMBAD is the reference database for identification and bibliography of astronomical objects (outside the solar system).
- VizieR is a catalogue service for large sky surveys, catalogues and tables published in academic papers, and more and more other data associated to publications.
- The interactive sky atlas Aladin provides an interactive portal to access image collections and databases available via Virtual Observatory protocols.
- The CDS cross-match service allows to do positional cross-matching of very large catalogues.
This tutorial presents a simple workflow of the CDS services: SIMBAD, VizieR and Aladin.
It was first presented during the french astronomy prospective meeting in December 2024.
Workflow :
- We start from a single object in SIMBAD, then from the bibliography we access the VizieR catalogue service.
- The IVOA SAMP protocol is used to broadcast the data from the web browser to Aladin desktop.
- Multiple HiPS image surveys are loaded, with their MOC spatial coverage.
- We compute the intersection of these MOCs and use this complex region to filter another table of low surface brightness galaxy candidates.
The collection of HiPS surveys is listed here. The hips2fist service is accessible here.
